Barbie has been on a roll with its new releases — from the Miley Cyrus doll to the Angel Reese Barbie and even the signature holiday series, the brand has had no shortage of ideas when it comes to paying tribute to some of the world’s biggest icons. Now, Mattel is honoring another superstar: Whitney Houston.
Just released today, the Whitney Houston Barbie doll is available for purchase on Walmart and Amazon, and features Houston in the same dress she wore in the “I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)” music video, per the official product description. That means she’s decked out in a sleek purple dress, statement curly locks, accessories, and makeup that makes her look like she just walked off set.
While Houston died in 2012, this Barbie was created in partnership with Pat Houston, executor of Whitney Houston’s estate.
“Today, we celebrate more than the release of a doll; we celebrate the enduring legacy of an icon. The new Whitney Houston Barbie honors a woman whose voice, grace, beauty, and spirit inspired generations around the world. May this doll remind every child and every collector that dreams have no limits, excellence leaves a lasting imprint, and true greatness never goes out of style. Thank you, Mattel, for making one of Whitney’s dreams come true,” Pat Houston, Executor, The Estate of Whitney E. Houston and President, The Whitney E. Houston Legacy Foundation, said in a release.
Throughout her life, Houston won six Grammy Awards out of 25 nominations. Some of her biggest hits include “I Will Always Love You,” “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” (the inspiration for this doll), and “How Will I Know.” Her string of chart-topping hits eventually landed her in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame posthumously in 2020, as well as a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records. Today, her songs on Spotify have racked up over 8.8 billion streams.
“Whitney Houston’s music has been the soundtrack to countless moments for fans around the world. Barbie is proud to honor her extraordinary legacy with the latest addition to the Barbie Signature Series. Created in close collaboration with Pat Houston, Executor of The Estate of Whitney E. Houston and President of The Whitney E. Houston Legacy Foundation, this doll celebrates her unmistakable style, joy and spirit. We hope it gives fans a meaningful way to celebrate the artist whose voice and influence continue to resonate around the world,” Nathan Baynard, Vice President and Head of Barbie, Mattel, said in a release.
For a piece of music history, add the Whitney Houston Signature Series Barbie doll to your cart — but don’t wait too long. Barbie’s recent launches have sold out at record speed, and we don’t want you sitting there thinking, “I Have Nothing.”
