Gwar Covers Chappell Roan’s ‘Pink Pony Club’ and Its Glorious

The Scumdogs of the Universe deliver a thrilling rendition of the Grammy winner’s smash hit
“It smells so clean!” yells a Gwar bandmate off camera as the self-professed Scumdogs of the Universe step into Chelsea Studios. While New York may be a bit different from the recesses of hell, the crew settled right in, launching into a thrilling rendition of Chappell Roan‘s massive hit, “Pink Pony Club,” for A.V. Undercover.
While Blöthar the Berserker eases in to the song as best he can, soon the band amps up the stakes and when the frontman hits the chorus, belting out, “God, what have you done? You’re a pink pony girl And you dance at the club” — it’s a sight, and sound, to behold.
This isn’t the first time the intergalatic headbangers rolled through for the A.V. Club’s series — back in 2015, the regulars delivered a raging interpretation of Cyndi Lauper’s “She Bop,” and later kicked off the show’s return in 2024 with a cover of Ryan Gosling’s Barbie power ballad, “I’m Just Ken.”
“‘Pink Pony Club’ is about embracing exile from a boring, shitty world and remaking yourself into whatever you want—be who you are, be who you aren’t, piss people off, we don’t care!” the thrash metal band said in a statement.
While “Pink Pony Club” garnered moderate buzz during its release in 2020, the pop anthem rose in popularity four years later as part of Roan’s breakthrough debut album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess. Roan captivated audiences when she performed the song at the 2025 Grammy Awards, where she won Best New Artist. The track is listed as one of the 250 Greatest Songs of the 21st Century So Far by Rolling Stone, which notes, “It’s the pop anthem that best defines her joyful arrival as one of the most compelling pop voices of her generation.”
