Candace Cameron Bure Opens Up on ‘Rough Season’ in Marriage

Candace Cameron Bure is opening up about a low point in her marriage to Valeri Bure.
“Val and I went through a really, really rough season in our marriage,” Candace, 49, revealed on the Tuesday, July 8, episode of her eponymous podcast. “And we were like, ‘I don’t know, don’t think … we’re gonna make it through.’ But at one point, Lev [the couple’s eldest son] preached, like, a 45-minute sermon on marriage to us. Just had his Bible open on the couch and just talked about it.”
The Full House alum added, “And I’ll never forget, ‘cause he said, ‘You know, I know I haven’t been married. I’m just a young kid. And so it’s probably hard to take marriage advice from someone this young [who] never experienced it before. But I don’t need to be married to know what the word of God says.’”
Candace said her son “was such a calm voice that had so much wisdom behind it.” She and Val “walked away” thinking, “We raised some pretty good kids.”
Candace and Valerie, 51, tied the knot in 1996, and later welcomed Natasha, 26, Lev, 25, and Maksim, 23.
Candace’s Full House costar, Dave Coulier, had set her up with the former hockey pro.
“[Lori Loughlin and I] were looking at these two cute men on the ice, and I was like, ‘I wanna meet that one, the blonde one,’ which was Val,” she recalled during a 2014 interview. “We went on a date the very next day, and in less than a year we were engaged.”
Through the years, Candace has shed insight on the less-than-perfect realities of her partnership with Valeri.
“My husband is a natural-born leader. I quickly learned that I had to find a way of honoring his take-charge personality and not get frustrated about his desire to have the final decision on just about everything,” she wrote in her 2013 book, Balancing It All. “I am not a passive person, but I chose to fall into a more submissive role in our relationship because I wanted to do everything in my power to make my marriage and family work.”
In 2018, the former View cohost alluded to their marital challenges, exclusively telling Us Weekly, “Marriage is a wonderful, beautiful thing but there’s always going to be tough times. There’s no one that has this amazingly perfect marriage. … You just hang in there and stick with it.”
Candace said that keeping busy has helped keep the spark alive.
“Because I travel a lot, that’s the secret!” she told Us at the time. “Because, you know, being away from each other makes the heart grow fonder.”
