Weekend Update’s Colin Jost, Michael Che Exchange Jokes

Saturday Night Live‘s Weekend Update took on murder suspect Luigi Mangione‘s extradition to New York City, a forthcoming House Ethics Committee report on former congressman Matt Gaetz, and felon George Santos‘ new podcast. Co-anchors Colin Jost and Michael Che also made their annual joke exchange–with topics getting personal.
Jost, after describing Mangione’s return to the city where he allegedly shot the CEO of United Healthcare, said, “In related news, Bumble exploded.”
Mangione is being held in the same jail as rapper and alleged sex trafficker Diddy. Che, also alluding to Mangione’s appearance and the online attention to it, joked, “Said Diddy, ‘Mmm, Christmas came early.’”
Che then turned Gaetz, whose nomination as attorney general went up in flames amid allegations–which he denies–of having sex with a minor and of sex trafficking. A House Ethics Committee report delving into the matter is expected to be released in the next few days, after weeks of uncertainty.
“Gaetz says he’s just glad his girlfriend is too young to read the news,” Che joked, marking back-to-back weeks of an age-related jab at the ex-congressman.
Jost then had some words for another scandal-plagued former Republican representative who too faced an ethics report on Capitol Hill: convicted fraudster George Santos.
Mentioning Santos’ podcast, Pants on Fire, Jost quipped, “You can download the first episode for free, simply by entering your full social security number.”
This being the final Weekend Update of the year, Jost and Che closed the segment sticking to tradition by reading jokes the other had written for them. Some topics were personal, with Jost’s wife, Scarlett Johansson, at one point appearing shocked backstage.
Jost was also required to read his lines in “Black voice”–something which Che got a kick out of.
