LeAnn Rimes Cibrian is speaking the truth with a lot of humor and even more candy. The singer/actress posted on Instagram about the fans’ comments showing concern for her character’s smoking on the set of the new series ‘911: Nashville’. Rimes made a video that was both entertaining and instructive where she disclosed what she was actually smoking on the set, which was not tobacco.
The camera captures Rimes struggling hard not to burst into laughter while explaining the prop. “I made a mistake,” she says with giggles and proceeds to show the candy cigarette. “I’m not going to tell you.” Then she demonstrates the candy trick saying half joking that it is really hard to keep it in the right place. “It is the skill that comes with it,” she says jokingly still very much amused by the whole thing. At the end of her video, she calls this the “last selfie habit,” all the while giving her audience a good look at the harmless candy.
The singer did not miss the chance to make some sharp comments in her caption for the critics. “In case you guys are not watching @911nashville yet, firstly, you should definitely try it and secondly, if you do not know the show, at least read a post caption before commenting,” she wrote. She concentrated on the smoking issue, saying “for the ones who are in my comments going crazy because I am holding a cigarette, I hope this clears the argument on whether I smoke or not.” She thanked her “special acting coach/incredible head of wardrobe, Elizabeth, for the prep” as she signed off.
In no time the comment section was overflowing with supporters and those who appreciated her humorous way of addressing the matter. One user confessed, “I had to take a second look 👀 I thought she was smoking 🚬 🤭” – capturing precisely the doubt Rimes was trying to elucidate.
Another user a little reminiscent pointed to a common childhood experience: “I think we all had practice in childhood with the candy cigarettes .. 🤪” This evocation of the old candy from the past enriched the conversation by adding a collective memory.
One enthusiastic comment read: “I knew you didn’t smoke. Why would you risk your voice like that??? lol” and then added, “Also I love that you are playing against your real personality! I bet you are having lots of fun playing Dixie! 🥰” The comment reflected concern for Rimes’ vocal health as well as appreciation for her acting range.
The dialogue took a most interesting turn when someone referred to TV history: “Grey’s Anatomy Season 6 had everyone fooled when Jessica had fake smoke in her head and Callie called her out, saying, ‘you smoke.’ It’s an excellent example of fans sometimes being unable to tell the difference between reality and fiction. You are doing a great job, do not let the fans bother you.” This was a comparison to another show where actors used smoking props, showing that this is not an unusual issue in the TV industry.
Another user differed advising, “It’s nobody’s business if you smoke; it’s your choice” – this, however, completely missed the point Rimes made about it being a prop and not a personal habit.
The timing of Rimes’ posting was perfect as it coincided with the ‘911: Nashville’ show which was garnering more and more viewers. The show has been the singer’s career drastic change who by then had already been recognized through the massive hit “Blue” released in 1996 when she was a teen country music star. Rimes at the age of 42 has moreover, besides music, acting, writing, and mental health advocacy also diversifying her career. She recently announced a new Christmas album with a surprise duet.
Rimes’ fan concern approach showed that she is no longer a defensive artist but a maturing entertainer who knows how to handle the sometimes tricky social media interactions with the fans. She was able to turn what could have been a criticism into a fun moment with her audience by making the situation lighthearted while at the same time clarifying it.
The candy cigarette demo is a reminder that the viewers do not always see the truth on the show and sometimes the most controversial props turn out to be mere sweets in disguise. Rimes’ handling of the incident displayed both her professionalism and her ability to not take herself too seriously, which might have contributed to her being around for so many years in the limelight. Fans can also look forward to her Greatest Hits Christmas vinyl and limited edition turntable.
