Finneas Crushes on Kate Hudson in Spacey ‘2001’ Video

The new single features on his sophomore album, For Cryin’ Out Loud!, released last year
Finneas is a lovestruck actor playing an astronaut on the big screen, while haplessly in love with his director off-screen. Directed by Claudia Sulewski, the singer-songwriter stars in his new music video for “2001” alongside Kate Hudson.
The infectious, yearning track begins with a nod to Pink Floyd as Finneas sings: “Stuck waitin’ for you on the dark side of the moon/With an unbeatable view at a table for two.” The video echos the lyrics through its otherworldly theme, as the camera cuts between scenes of Finneas filming against a green screen, his fruitless attempt to catch the eye of his director (Hudson), and the musician caught in a life-sized diorama of the solar system.
Sulewski said in a statement that when conceptualizing the video, she wanted to “pay homage to 2001: A Space Odyssey,” including “nods to some of the film’s most iconic set ups like the fisheye lens and the upside-down sequence.” She added, “To play off Finneas’s lyrics, I wanted to mix in some light, cheeky moments between Finneas and Kate. An actor hopelessly in love with his director, who couldn’t care less and is only focused on making a great film.”
The video arrives as the 10-time Grammy winner wraps a headlining tour across the U.K., Europe, New Zealand, Australia, and North America this year in support of his second studio album, For Cryin’ Out Loud, released in October. Finneas will return to Europe this summer for festival performances in
London, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Austria, Spain and more before returning to North America for
sets at this Osheaga Festival, Lollapalooza, and Outside Lands.
