Every crew was back together for the first time; well, at least in Funko form. A somewhat funny-and-heart-warming announcement video declared the entire cast ready for pre-order. Nathan Fillion, Alan Tudyk, Sean Maher, and others made cameo appearances, triggering a long-awaited meltdown amongst Browncoats.

Cut to the video, where the cast slipped effortlessly back into their characters, speaking about how they had yet to get new Funko Pops to represent themselves. Enter Nathan Fillion himself, as the ever-funny Captain Mal Reynolds, declaring that having a Funko figure is the equivalent of a sci-fi Oscar. Alan Tudyk chimed in with that wit of his, while the rest of the cast was fully on board. Twenty years later, that was a very familiar feeling.

An unexpected announcement started an elation-filled onset, with many a Browncoat admitting to feeling quite emotional again after seeing the cast. One user wrote, “Ahhhh!!!! OMG I was not expecting to feel so emotional seeing this cast reunited! Browncoats forever!!!” Others expressed their initial disbelief, as one went, “Maaaaaan, when I saw y’all together in my feed with the caption ‘it finally happened’ I thought IT had finally happened.” Any little bit of disappointment was quickly wiped away as they threw themselves into celebrating the new collectibles.

The conspicuous absence of the rest did not go unnoticed by quite a few eagle-eyed viewers, asking several times about Jewel Staite (Kaylee), Adam Baldwin (Jayne), and Morena Baccarin (Inara). Funko responded that, while those characters were indeed in the new line of collectibles, they just didn’t earn their moment in the spotlight within that announcement. Having sparked a very entertaining exchange of banter with one fan demanding that Jayne be officially recognized as “The Hero of Canton.”

The impromptu feel and inside jokes of this just really worked in favor of the Firefly loyalists. Fillion even jumped into the comment section joking about “street dealers” for Funko Pops and responded to fans with classic Firefly lines such as “Aim to misbehave!” and “Shiny!” These playful exchanges acted as the icing on the cake, putting an even warmer and family-like feeling around the whole announcement.

At least that is what the comments reflect about what Firefly still means to people, as I gathered. “One day they will make another Firefly. One day it will be from a person who found some old DVDs from their parents’ old boxes and fell in love with such a great universe,” a fan commented. Another went, “You folks could never be forgotten,” an almost performative act of reminding everyone of the age-old love for this example of a canceled show.

Now, the new Funko Pops are updated versions of all your favorites with some great chase variants like Shepherd Book with his weird “poofy hair” that freaked River out. This is the first collector’s chance to finish off their Firefly collection with newer designs. For all casual fans are afforded an excellent opportunity to remember why this little space western will always hold a warm spot in many hearts.

If the comment section is anything to go by, Firefly will always, in some regard, live on. Souvenirs, conventions, reruns, and streams forever along the Browncoats! And clearly, through such a reunion, the cast feels just the same about it. The video ends with Nathan Fillion locking eyes with the camera for that infamous soulless Funko stare and uttering a perfect Firefly line-a little proof that some things never do go out of style.
