Suspect Julio Cesar Lopez Zavala Arrested

Police detained 23-year-old Julio Cesar Lopez Zavala after video appeared to show him allegedly punching a woman in the crowd at the Rose Bowl
A 23-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assaulting fellow concertgoers during a Rüfüs Du Sol show at the Rose Bowl in Los Angeles over the weekend, the Los Angeles Times reports.
The suspect was identified as Julio Cesar Lopez Zavala. Police say that video footage of the assault, as well as tips from the public, helped them identify Zavala, who was taken into custody Thursday, Aug. 21. His case has been sent to the L.A. County District Attorney’s office for review before formal charges are filed.
In a statement, the Pasadena Police Department said that their investigation “revealed that three victims were assaulted to varying degrees.” They added that the suspect “reportedly became agitated after a drink was spilled.”
Video of the assault went viral after it was shared on the popular Instagram account, The Festive Owl. The clip showed a man repeatedly punching someone, while others tried to hold him back and call for help. Splatters of blood could also be seen on the Rose Bowl bleachers.
One of the fans involved, Shelby, shared a statement with the Festive Owl, saying that she accidentally spilled a drink on a man who later “punched me in the face, knocking me out and causing significant bleeding, while he continued attacking our group. Another friend tried to protect us, but the attacker fled into the crowd.”
Rüfüs Du Sol issued a statement as well, saying, “Delivering moments to our fans to gather and celebrate safely is what we live for. We have been heart broken to hear of the act of violence that took place during the opening act on Saturday. This type of behavior is completely unacceptable anywhere, and the fact that this happened at one of our shows was devastating to learn about.”
