See Adele Bring Back ‘Chasing Pavements’ as Munich Residency Begins
Singer brings back her breakout 2008 single – and tells the crowd why she stopped singing it – at opening night of her custom-made stadium in German city
Adele’s residency jumped from Las Vegas to Munich Friday, where the singer performed the first of 10 gigs at Adele Arena, a stadium customized specifically for the singer’s concerts in the German city. The performance also marked Adele’s first non-U.K. European concert since 2016, and to mark the occasion, she switched up her setlist to include a hit she hadn’t performed in seven years.
For the first time since 2017, Adele delivered a live rendition of “Chasing Pavements,” her second-ever single and breakthrough hit from her 2008 debut album 19. Prior to the rare performance, Adele explained to the audience why she stopped singing the Grammy-winning single live.
“The reason I don’t sing this song very often — and I shan’t sing it again after this Munich residency — is because the way I pronounce the words in this song when I was 19 years old, I sound like I’m 19 years old, and when I sing it now, I still sound like 19 years old, and it annoys me,” Adele said prior to “Chasing Pavements.”
“But I’m going to do it now because I love you, and again, the Germans have always been very, very loving to me. But I’m only going to do it if you do it with me.”
Adele followed “Chasing Pavements” with another seldom-played track, “All I Ask,” the 25 song that was only performed once during the entirety of her Weekends With Adele run in Las Vegas.
The singer will return to Sin City following the Munich run, with the Weekends With Adele residency concluding for good in November. After that, Adele said she plans on taking a “big break” from music. “I don’t have any plans for new music, at all,” Adele shared. “I want a big break after this and I think I want to do other creative things, just for a little while.”
