Lizzo Says if Harris Wins the Country Will Be ‘Resilient Like Detroit’

Lizzo appeared at an event with Democratic presidential nominee and Vice President Kamala Harris for an early vote event in Detroit, Michigan where they both touted the city; their praise was in direct contrast to the GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump, who recently insulted the city.
“All the best things were made in Detroit: Coney dogs, Faygo, and Lizzo,” the singer said. “I’m so proud to be from this city. You know, they say if Kamala wins, then the whole country will be like Detroit. OK. Proud like Detroit. Resilient like Detroit. We’re talking about the same Detroit that innovated the auto industry and the music industry. So put some respect on Detroit’s name.”
Last week, Trump disparaged the city while he was addressing the Detroit Economic Club. “The whole country will be like — you want to know the truth? It’ll be like Detroit,” the Republican presidential nominee said, painting the great Michigan city in a derogatory manner. “Our whole country will end up being like Detroit if she’s your president.”
During Lizzo’s speech on Saturday, she said she had already voted early for Harris and encouraged others to get out early to vote, too.
“They say voting is not a love letter, it’s a chess move,” Lizzo continued. “Well, I feel like voting early is not just a chess move, it’s a power move… There’s a lot of people who feel like their vote doesn’t matter, but I say to that: If your vote didn’t matter, then voter suppression would not exist. If your vote didn’t matter, they wouldn’t discourage young people from going to the polls. If your vote didn’t matter, our parents and our grandparents would not have marched and fought for our right to vote.”
She added: “And also you live in the great state of Michigan. This is the swing state of all swing states. So every single last vote here counts.”
Harris arrived onstage in a blazer and T-shirt that read “Detroit vs. Everybody,” which elicited cheers.
Harris heads to Atlanta later on Saturday for another early vote event, where Usher will also appear. Meanwhile, Trump will be rallying in Latrobe, Pennsylvania.
