Hairdresser shares 3 youthful and flattering hairstyles for women over 40
It’s easier than many women think to create a more youthful appearance without relying on expensive skincare or cosmetics. All it takes is changing your hair to flatter an ageing complexion.
Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, Nicola Wilcox, Professional Hairdresser and Brand Executive at Capital Hair and Beauty, said: “In my opinion, the best hairstyles for women over 40 should be tailored to each individual, considering their face shape and unique features.”
She continued: “I strongly believe that women of a certain age shouldn’t feel pressured to cut their hair short, as is often suggested. While some women, particularly those going through menopause, prefer shorter hair for comfort, it’s not always necessary in every case.
“Every woman’s features, hair type, and lifestyle are unique to them and should be considered during the consultation process to find the best style for them.”
Many celebrities have proven the benefits of a good haircut, and according to Nicola, they opt for three “popular” styles. She shared the most “flattering” looks among women over 40.
1. Long layered cut
Nicola described this style as reminiscent of “The Rachel” from Friends. Described as “a soft, versatile style that suits most people”, it’s a great option for those who don’t want to lose any length from their locks.
The hair expert said: “As for what to ask for in the salon, it all comes down to a thorough consultation. Be open about your lifestyle—how much time you can dedicate to styling and maintenance, how your hair makes you feel, whether you prefer longer or shorter hair, and what makes you feel good.”
She added: “Your stylist should also share their insights on what will highlight your best features.”
2. Pixie cut
Nicola reassures women that going short is “not necessary” when it comes to finding a flattering hairstyle, but the pixie cut is a classic for those who want to. Short haircuts are a timeless way to accentuate the eyes and cheekbones, and they look even better when paired with a side-swept fringe.
The hair expert explained that “a short, vertical graduation, (or pixie cut) similar to what Halle Berry, Jamie Lee Curtis, Keira Knightley, and Jennifer Lawrence have sported” is universally flattering on mature women.
