Grimes Addresses Antisemitic and Racist Attacks in Online Fanbase

Grimes has addressed a wave of antisemitic and racially-charged attacks among her fanbase. In an X post Monday, Grimes addressed online trolls who she said have been pushing an alarming agenda on her Reddit forum.

“If it wasn’t clear – ****I very much denounce Nazi-ism and white supremacy*****,” she wrote in her post, adding Reddit has refused to address the issue. “I am sorry I didn’t take this more seriously sooner, I did not realize the extent of the issue. But it has come to my attention from some of yall that this has been creating a lot of trouble.”

Grimes added online users have harassed, stalked, and called the workplace of her family and friends. She also encouraged fans to reach out to her and promised to make efforts to address the harassment complaints.

“I am sad at the division in the world rn,” Grimes continued. “And I’m rly sorry anyone who has had to see super toxic negative things in the grimes fandom on my behalf. I am sorry to the few fans who I also know have been harassed in this way as well.”

Her decision to vocalize her dissent is timely given a hand gesture Elon Musk — with whom she shares three children — made during Donald Trump‘s inauguration rally. As Musk thanked the crowd, online critics have said he made a hand motion that resembles the Nazi salute. In response to the viral clip, Musk has been dismissive, cracking Nazi-themed puns on X and sharing messages such as “The ‘everyone is Hitler’ attack is sooo tired.” Since Musk took over the app in 2022, there’s also been an uptick in racist and antisemitic posts and comments on the platform.

Grimes and Musk’s three children are X Æ A-Xii, Exa Dark Sideræl, and Tau Techno Mechanicus. The couple got together in 2018, were semi-separated in 2021, with Grimes filing legal action against Musk over their kids in 2023. They have since kept their relationship status private.

Earlier this month, Grimes, dressed in an ethereal veil, surprised fans with a performance at the Sphere, alongside electronic artist Anyma.
