Amanda Seyfried shed her clothes for some rather explicit prosthetics to get into character in The Testament of Ann Lee.

“This movie, it needed to be graphic,” Seyfried, 40, explained during a Wednesday, February 25, appearance on BBC Radio 2. “So, like, I had a prosthetic butthole. It was exciting.”

She continued, “I was pregnant and naked, but I wasn’t naked at all and at the end of the movie, I’m standing in front of a burning building with just a merkin. I felt so free.”

Interviewer Scott Mills was visibly shocked by the admission since the prosthetic was not clearly visible in the scene. (And so were we!) Toward the end of the interview, Seyfried clarified, “You cannot see my butthole in [the scene], but I swear there is a prosthetic butthole there.”

Amanda Seyfried recently opened up about what the next decade looks like for her after turning 40. “It looks sweaty. It looks less full of judgment from myself. It looks healthier in a lot of ways, emotionally, hopefully,” she exclusively told Us Weekly at The Testament of Ann Lee premiere in Hollywood on Sunday, December […]

Seyfried portrays the titular character, who was the founding leader of the Shakers and proclaimed as the female Christ, in the Mona Fastvold-directed historical musical drama. The film also stars Thomasin McKenzie, Lewis Pullman, Stacy Martin, Tim Blake Nelson and Christopher Abbott and features choreography by Celia Rowlson-Hall and original songs and score by Daniel Blumberg.

The Mamma Mia! actress shared more details about the nude burning house scene that took place at the end of The Testament of Ann Lee.

“When the house is burning and Mary’s laying there with her eye out, and Lewis is truly suffering from hypothermia in real life, we had Matthew Beard — who’s one of the best actors of our generation, for sure — and all of us were just screaming for 10 minutes straight because we had four cameras going at the same time,” Seyfried told Variety in December 2025.

Seyfried called it “one of those moments where we could have all just really wanted to quit what we do because it was so hard and cold and we didn’t know what was happening.”

Once they were done filming the scene, the cast members “kind of got up and laughed, even though [they] were soaked and cold and bloodied.”

“We knew we’d do it for the love of the game, but we also knew that we were all doing it together — and if that ain’t something, why [do] we do it?” Seyfried added of the grueling scene.

Seyfried was praised by critics for her performance in the film, but snubbed by the Academy when the nominations for the 98th Oscars were announced in January. Though fans were disappointed, Seyfried confessed that winning a trophy was not important to her.

“Do you remember who won in the past 10 years? It’s not the win that’s important. It’s the nomination,” she told The New Yorker in January. “It does thrust you forward. That’s a fact. Now, do I need one in a week or two or whenever? No, of course, I don’t. Would it be great? Of course it would, for every reason. But it isn’t necessary.”

The Housemaid actress continued, “Longevity in an actor’s career is designed. Longevity is about deliberate choices to make art among the big commercial things that are fun and pay. But, for me, all of it is art,” adding, “I’ve gotten this far without an Oscar. Why would I need one now?”
