John Cena posted a photo to Instagram on Tuesday, June 24, with no caption. The image was the whole post.

That might not seem like much, but for someone with Cena’s profile, even a quiet post gets noticed. Cena, 49, has been one of the most recognizable figures in American entertainment for more than 20 years. He started in WWE in 2002 and spent the next decade and a half at the top of professional wrestling. He won the world title 16 times, a record. His ‘hustle, loyalty, respect’ catchphrase became part of the sport’s culture. His merchandise was everywhere.

He was also one of the more polarizing stars in wrestling history. Cena’s character was designed for broad appeal, particularly with younger fans, and it worked. But a segment of the audience pushed back hard for years. Arenas would often split right down the middle, half cheering, half booing. For Cena, it seemed to roll off him. He kept winning championships and kept showing up. The business side of his run was hard to dispute.

Around 2018, Cena started cutting back on wrestling to focus on film and TV. He had already been building that side career for a few years. He showed up in comedies like Trainwreck in 2015 and Blockers in 2018. He had a decent natural timing for comedy that wasn’t always obvious from his wrestling persona.

The bigger opportunities came soon after. He joined the Fast & Furious franchise with F9 in 2021, playing Jakob Toretto, a character with a complicated history with Dom Toretto’s crew. The film did well at the global box office. The movie industry was still recovering from the pandemic then.

He also headlined Peacemaker on Max, a DC series that spun off from The Suicide Squad. The show debuted in early 2022 and was built around dark humor. Cena played an antihero. The role gave him room to be both ridiculous and a little menacing. It was well-reviewed.

Outside of his career, Cena has become closely associated with Make-A-Wish. He holds the record for granting the most wishes of any celebrity through the organization. He’s mentioned it in interviews more than once. Most people who know his name know about it.

On Instagram, Cena maintains an active presence. He’s posted photos and other content there regularly over the years. Tuesday’s photo, without a caption, was brief by any standard. But his name alone is enough to get people to take a look.
